Two-day canoe descent of the Ardèche

A genuine expedition, not just an activity

Unlike a brief taster session, our two-day descent offers a true expedition experience. Students will spend an overnight camp or gîte stay on the river, transforming this from a mere activity slot into a memorable journey. This unique immersion provides a completely different narrative for parents compared to simply "trying canoeing." The Ardèche gorge itself, with its dramatic limestone cliffs, the iconic Pont d'Arc natural arch, wild swimming spots, and visible caves, offers genuinely spectacular scenery that captures beautifully and creates lasting memories. This progressive skill-building ensures day one covers technique and safety, while day two pushes into more technical waters and longer distances, creating a visible arc of improvement over 48 hours. Furthermore, this screen-free adventure offers a welcome disconnection from routine, with no phones or rooms to retreat to, fostering a deeper engagement with the outdoors.

Safety and comfort, prioritised

The descent is packed with the moments students remember most —Organised  rock  jumps into deep pools, wild swims beneath towering limestone walls, and paddling through scenery few will ever have seen before. It's adventure at its most vivid, balanced with careful planning at every stage.

Every canoe descent is led by qualified instructors and river guides, maintaining safe student-to-staff ratios. The route follows the natural shape of the river, easing students in on gentler waters day one before building confidence for more on day two. For the overnight stay, students bivouac at a listed nature reserve, deep in the heart of the gorge — what better setting to arrive at pre pitched tent's in the middle of gorge?

Picture it: tents up, and time to explore. The river catching the light, the air scented with wild herbs from the surrounding hillside. Along the water's edge, students might spot a dipper darting low over the current, a Bonelli's eagle circling far overhead, or — if they're lucky — the quick blue streak of a kingfisher. It's a rare kind of stillness, and a chance to properly disconnect.

The Gorges de l'Ardèche have been a protected nature reserve since 1980, home to over a thousand species across 2,000 hectares of wilderness. Wild camping isn't permitted here — but two designated bivouac sites, at Gaud and Gournier, let visitors stay right in the heart of the gorge without disturbing it.

Staff camp alongside the group throughout, with hot food, dry kit, and a settled evening routine in place well before dark.

Comprehensive emergency and weather contingency plans are established and maintained throughout the trip, with clear communication provided to parents and schools before departure. This is an adventure, but never an unplanned one, guaranteeing peace of mind for school decision-makers.
